Dr. Udo Nehren

Udo Nehren is a senior researcher and lecturer in Physical Geography and Ecosystem Management at the Institute for Technology and Resources Management in the Tropics and Subtropics at TH Köln, Germany. He received a diploma in Geography and Geosciences from University of Trier, a Master of Engineering in Technology in the Tropics from TH Köln, and a PhD in Geography from University of Leipzig. He completed his habilitation (venia legendi) at University of Passau with a dissertation on “Sustainable management of tropical and subtropical landscapes based on the concept of ecosystem services”. From 2009 to 2014 Udo Nehren was scientific coordinator of the international university network Centers for Natural Resources and Development (CNRD) and the research project INTECRAL (Integrated eco technologies and services for a sustainable Rural Rio de Janeiro). Since 2015 he is full-time lecturer and researcher at TH Köln and outside lecturer at University of Passau. His research emphasizes on landscape evolution and environmental change, ecosystem-based disaster risk reduction and adaptation, and ecosystem management with regional foci in Latin America and Southeast Asia. He published several books and articles on these topics and contributed to the development of teaching materials and didactic concepts. In 2014 he received the teaching award of his university.
